Building Integrated Photovoltaics – From Best Practice Examples to Large-Scale Market Penetration

jointly with the International Energy Agency Photovoltaic Power Systems Programme (IEA PVPS) – IEA PVPS Task 15 and ETIP PV

The presence of proven technology, numerous successful examples, new innovative BIPV products with a larger degree of design freedom for architects and an increasing need for energy conversion at the building level, is still not sufficient to foster a large and self-sustaining BIPV market. There are still hurdles for large-scale market penetration of BIPV, both at national and international level. These hurdles consist especially of economic, technological, legal, aesthetic, reliability and normative issues. There is still a strong need for knowledge transfer between BIPV stakeholders, a missing link in business approach, an unequal playing field regarding regulatory issues and environmental assessment and a transfer gap between products and application. Task 15 will address these issues by exchanging research, knowledge and experience, and offering the possibility to close gaps between all BIPV stakeholders, creating an enabling framework to accelerate the implementation of BIPV.
Task 15 aims at helping stakeholders from the building sector, energy sector, the public, government and financial sector to overcome technical and non-technical barriers in the implementation of BIPV in the built environment by the development of processes, methods and tools that assist them.

Preliminary program info –
As a parallel event of the 37th EU PVSEC, the Workshop “Building Integrated Photovoltaics – from best practice examples to large-scale market penetration” organized by the International Energy Agency (IEA) Photovoltaic Power Systems Programme (PVPS) Task 15 (phase 2), will organize a series of expert presentations and discussions addressing topics related to the further market deployment and the above mentioned issues and barriers related to the large-scale application of BIPV.
It is planned to organize moderated sessions containing a series of expert presentations, discussions and networking opportunities (detailed agenda follows).

Panel Discussion

Key Questions for panel discussion and for all talks (under the current working title of the event “Building Integrated Photovoltaics – from best practice examples to large-scale market penetration”) could be:

  • Based on our experience of a lot of successful and also not successful projects: What can we do to increase the BIPV market?
  • What do we expect from different actors (organizations like PVPS, ETIP, SPE, industry, standardization bodies etc.)?
  • What are important obstacles that are not yet addressed properly by any of these actors?
