35th EU PVSEC 2018 - The conference plenaries preview by Dr. Heinz Ossenbrink / part 3

The conference plenaries are pre-viewed around the three strands of photovoltaics:

Strand 1: Science & Technology of PV Conversion

Strand 2: PV Electricity Systems

Strand 3: PV as Energy Source

Exposed in more detail now:

Strand 3: PV as Energy Source

PLENARY SESSION 7EP.1 10:30-11:30 A Vision for PV in the Energy Sector

A number of expert assessments agree that within a few years PV will reach 500 GW of cumulative installations globally. PV starts to become the major electricity source in many countries. Prices continue to decrease, and so do applications in many regions of the world. The plenary session, which rounds up the conference intends to provide you a cross-section to current views and visions for PV deployment for the next years to come.

As the global agreements on climate change continue to be a strong driver for PV markets, the following plenary presentations deal with the promise of the Paris agreement to decarbonise the energy sector by 2050.

The plenary presentation 7EP.1.1 Solar Photovoltaic Capacity Demand for a Sustainable Transportation Sector to Fulfil the Paris Agreement by 2050 highlights the opportunity for PV to power the electric car fleet which without any doubt will feature similar growth rates as PV industry. As certainly decarbonising transport means to power by renewables, the role of PV is detailed by the authors. They will present an overall model for transport on a global scale, which includes road, maritime and air transport, as well as the required renewable energy supply for electricity, hydrogen and biofuels.

More on the European scale, plenary talk 7EP.1.2 is about Sector Coupling in Europe to Reach the Climate Change Mitigation Goals by 2050, and it will dig deeply into a scenario of 100% renewable energy supply by 2050. A requirement for such a scenario is that all sectors play together (“coupled”), and this regards as well reduction of consumption and efficiency improvements. The presentation will extend also beyond EU countries to the East (Ukraine, Belarus) and Southeast (Balkan, Turkey). Taking into account that renewables must cover electrical, heat and transportation energy, the presentation will show how this study arrives at a range 4.7 TW installed capacity of PV, Wind and Biomass, to achieve a GHG-free energy system. The presenters postulate a yearly PV installation rate of between 75 and 125 GW, to achieve the zero-carbon goals in Europe.

Plenary talk 7EP.1.3 is titled Photovoltaics, you should think Big!. This invited presentation will focus on some inspirational aspects and challenges of the PV sector. In this very last plenary, just before the closing session of the conference, the author will propose a number of stimulating messages.

The plenary preview above shows the wide range of topics the EU PVSEC brings to the audience. And if you want to know more detail: there will be about 1,000 presentations allowing close interaction with the authors and all this will help you to discover even more details.

Make use of the rich conference programme, and you’ll return home as a PV expert!

All plenaries are during the morning hours. Look at the schedule and just get into the Gold Hall on Centre Level 0.

We welcome you to the European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition!
