The 35th edition of this conference and exhibition offers you again an excellent opportunity to keep abreast of the latest market, technical and scientific developments in our fast-changing solar business.

In 2017, the global PV market surpassed the 100 GW mark for the first time, although unexpected at the beginning of the year. The PV market continues to surprise and to surpass expectations of many market observers, constantly breaking market size and cost records. Volume and scale have become important characteristics of this market, as we see many multi-GW national markets appearing, and the main PV manufacturers moving towards 10 GW in annual cell and module production capacity.

Although volume and manufacturing excellence are the main drivers to reduce cost, reaching electricity cost levels below 2c$/kWh in some countries and making solar one the cheapest electricity sources, the importance of technology evolution must not be underestimated. We have witnessed the fast adoption of several new technologies in large-scale manufacturing in recent years: the growth of PERC technology, in particular using monocrystalline silicon wafers, diamond wafering for multicrystalline silicon wafers , the introduction of bifacial panels, half-cut cells, shingling, multi-busbar technology, … Innovation is taking place at all stages of the value chain, from research in new materials such as perovskites, to new silicon cell architectures with power conversion efficiencies above 26% as well as new record efficiencies for tandem, thin-film and III-V material cells, and new module concepts.

In addition, the decentralized and intermittent nature of PV production gives rise to innovative commercial offerings for optimizing renewable energy generation and consumption, combining increasingly cost-competitive batteries with smart energy solutions using big data and artificial intelligence techniques. Undoubtedly, this embedding of PV in hybrid electricity systems will give rise to new markets with grid services and aggregation of production and consumption sources.

Dr. Dominique Neerinck, Vice President of Technology and R&D for Renewables at Total’s Gas, Renewables and Power division, is appointed as EU PVSEC 2018 Conference General Chairman following nomination and voting process by the EU PVSEC ISAC - International Scientific Advisory Committee. Dominique Neerinck is active in research in the areas of solar panels, batteries and energy management software. He holds a PhD in solid state physics from the Catholic University of Leuven in the area of thin film deposition technologies. Dominique has a broad industrial and managerial experience in companies such as Philips, Bekaert and Total, in particular in the commercialization and industrialisation of new technologies and managing global R&D organisations. He was president of the Belgian technology organisations Sirris (Belgian federation of the technological industry) and BiR&D (Belgian Industrial R&D Board), and is presently a board member of IPVF (Institut Photovoltaique d’Ile de France) and EIRMA (European Industrial Research management Association).
